Handheld Research publishes the books that researchers – from every discipline – are passionate about writing. Scholars love their subject and want to tell the world about it, and Handheld Press will put those stories in your hands. We relish the obscure and the specialist, when those stories are well written with passion and knowledge.
If you want to tell your research story through Handheld Press, get in touch by writing to us at Enquiries @ Handheld Press, or by completing the Handheld Research proposal form (.docx format) and sending it to the same address.
Handheld Research 1
£24.99 hardback; £6.99 ePub & Kindle
This is the long-lost story of the deep and passionate relationships between acclaimed British feminist author Sylvia Townsend Warner, her lover the poet Valentine Ackland, their friend the biographer and reluctant New England socialite Elizabeth Wade White, and her lover from New York, Evelyn Holahan, a professional woman of business. Their story begins when Elizabeth met Sylvia at a literary lunch in New York in 1929 and ends with Sylvia’s death in 1978. So many thorny passions and so much emotional integrity, this marvellous book is the literary love story of the year.

The Conscientious Objector’s Wife. Letters between Frank and Lucy Sunderland, 1916-1919, edited by Kate Macdonald
£19.99 hardback; £4.99 ePub & Kindle
Frank and Lucy Sunderland, English pacifists and fervent supporters of Labour politics and the New Town movement, were separated in 1916 when Frank was given his prison sentence as a conscientious objector. They wrote to each other from November 1916 until April 1919, while Frank was in prison at Wandsworth and at Bedford. Their letters record how Lucy kept their family going with the support of their predominantly pacifist and Quaker circle in Letchworth, contrasting with the attitude of their own London families. This unique collection of letters is important as a working-class record of wartime experience.
