I’m a publisher now. I’ve done most of the jobs in publishing apart from be a publisher, so it’s time I pulled it all together and set up on my own. I’ve been thinking about this company for some months, and have had many conversations about how the thing could be made to work. I was so lucky to have the help of Andrew Boag, a typographic historian and brand identity specialist, very early on. I have a designer working for me now on the book series, but that will take time, so I’ve been collecting book designer details for the early projects.
The first books are in the editing and proofing stages of production, and I’m looking at contracts.
I ‘incorporated’ last week, and now I am learning how to be a company director, and get insurance, and set up the bank account, and talk to accountants and lawyers. Because of this, my academic work has receded below the horizon (though my Head of Department is very understanding). I have lists of books I want to research for publication that are not getting any shorter. There is no TIME at the moment for anything except the admin. But once I’ve got that straight, I can set sail. More posts will appear when I catch sight of land.
